Here is an at-a-glance guide to some classic food and wine pairings. See which ones work for you and which don’t. Before you know it, you’ll be an expert matchmaker of food and wine.
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc:
seafood, rich soup, vegetables, goat and other strongly flavored cheeses, cream sauces
ham, pork, mild cheese, Indian, Thai and Chinese, chicken and turkey
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon:
roast beef or roast poultry, venison, cheddar, blue cheese
Pinot Noir, Zinfandel:
roast beef, turkey
chocolate, pastry, foie gras
stew, casserole, ratatouille
fancy Hors d’oeuvres, sushi, and omelets.
